Helium Tank or Ready-Filled Balloons: Which Costs Less for Your Party?

If you’re planning a party in KL, sooner or later you’ll ask yourself: should I buy a helium tank and fill the balloons myself, or order them ready-filled?

We sell both, so we’re happy to give you an honest answer. It depends on how many balloons you need, where they need to be, and how long they have to float. Here’s how to work it out, plus what this year’s helium supply problems mean for prices.

1. Work out the real cost per balloon

When comparing a helium tank with ready-filled balloons, the price of the tank alone is misleading. What matters is the cost per balloon, including everything you’ll need.

That’s why we always do the maths with our customers:

  • Our Lite 50 disposable helium tank costs RM175 and fills around 25–30 regular 12″ latex balloons. That’s roughly RM6–7 of helium per balloon, before you’ve bought the balloons, ribbon and weights.
  • A ready-filled 12″ helium balloon from us costs from RM6.50, including the balloon, pure helium, Hi-Float treatment, string and a weight. See our 12″ metallic balloons, for example.

So for regular 12″ latex balloons, ready-filled works out about the same per balloon, or cheaper, once you add the cost of the empty balloons. The tank wins in other situations, which we’ll come to below.

2. Think about how long the balloons need to float

When choosing between the two, float time is the difference most people don’t expect.

That’s why it’s worth knowing that we treat every latex balloon we fill with Hi-Float, a coating that keeps the helium in longer. Solid-colour 12″ latex balloons filled by us float for around 24 hours. Untreated latex balloons filled at home usually float for less than a day, and often only a few hours.

Foil balloons are different: they hold helium far longer, often for days, whether you fill them yourself or we do. Our float-time guide lists every balloon type.

If you fill latex balloons yourself, fill them on the day of the party, as close to the start as you can.

3. When a helium tank is the better choice

A tank isn’t always cheaper, but in some situations it’s simply the more practical choice:

  • Filling at the venue. Thirty filled balloons take up a lot of space in a car. With a tank, you carry a 5 kg box and fill everything on site.
  • Parties outside our delivery area. We deliver up to 50 km from our shop. For a party in Melaka or Ipoh, take a tank with you.
  • Balloons you already have. Printed or themed balloons bought elsewhere just need helium.
  • Kids’ activities. Some parents like filling balloons with the kids as part of the fun. Always under adult supervision, and never let anyone inhale helium.

The Lite 50 is disposable: no rental, no deposit and no empty cylinder to return. It’s 100% pure helium, non-flammable and non-toxic.

4. When ready-filled balloons are the better choice

For most parties in the Klang Valley, ready-filled balloons are less work and look better:

  • A bouquet or a few balloons for one place. We arrange them, add Hi-Float, and deliver them ready to hand over.
  • Personalised balloons. Names, ages and messages are made in-house in Taman Desa, and still delivered within 3 hours if you order before 4pm.
  • Bubble balloons and big balloons. Our bubble balloons are made with special equipment in our shop, and large balloons use up a home tank quickly: a Lite 50 fills only 2–3 large 36″ foil balloons.

Not sure what to order? Start with a build-your-own bunch of three, six or nine balloons in your own colours, or browse our helium balloon bouquets.

5. Is there a helium shortage in 2026?

Yes. In March 2026, attacks on Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas complex took a large part of the world’s helium production offline. Qatar normally supplies around a third of the world’s helium, and the global market has stayed tight since then, according to industry reports.

Here’s what that has meant for us so far:

  • Helium in large industrial cylinders, which balloon shops fill from, has gone up by more than 20% for us.
  • The disposable Lite 50 tank has been affected far less. We recently raised its price only very modestly.

One thing hasn’t changed: we fill every balloon with pure helium. When helium gets expensive, some sellers cut corners with helium-and-air mixes, which float for much less time, or even hydrogen, which is flammable. If a price looks too good to be true, ask what’s inside.

6. Same-day delivery or pickup in Taman Desa

Whichever you choose, order by 4pm for same-day delivery; all balloons, including personalised ones, are delivered within 3 hours. We deliver across KL, Selangor and Putrajaya, up to 50 km from our shop in Taman Desa, or you can pick up your tank or balloons from us there.
