Why Balloons Pop
Heat is the most common reason. Helium expands when it gets warm, for example in a parked car or in direct sunlight, until the balloon bursts. Sharp edges, rough surfaces and even static electricity can pop a balloon too.
Why Latex Balloons Turn Cloudy
Latex balloons can get a velvety, cloudy look in humidity, heat or sunlight. That’s called oxidation. It’s the natural latex beginning to break down, which is also why latex balloons are biodegradable. Indoors, in an air-conditioned room, it happens much more slowly.
